EUDI Wallet deadlines 2026 and 2027: all key dates

In short

By 24 December 2026 every EU member state must provide at least one EUDI Wallet, and from the same day national registers of wallet-relying parties must be public via a common API. Private companies in regulated sectors must accept the wallet by 24 December 2027 at the latest; micro and small enterprises are exempt. The wallet and acceptance deadlines are calculated from the legal text; the register date is stated in the implementing regulation. National launch dates vary and are announcements, not legal deadlines.

Confirmed, calculated, announced

Eudigo labels every date:

  • Confirmed: the date appears as such in the legal text.
  • Calculated: the legal text sets a period (“within 36 months of …”); the date follows from it.
  • Announced: a government or authority has named the date, but it is not legally binding.

What the dates mean

24 December 2026: wallets and registers

Article 5a(1) of the eIDAS Regulation requires each member state to provide at least one wallet within 24 months of the entry into force of the implementing acts. Not every country will be on time: as of 12 October 2026, the Eudigo EUDI Index shows no certified wallet, seven national apps that are live and officially being upgraded, one pilot and 14 countries where a wallet is only announced.

On the same day, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/848 starts to apply. Each member state must keep at least one register of wallet-relying parties, designate a registrar and publish the register entries in human- and machine-readable form. The data must be signed or sealed and available through a common REST API that can be searched without prior login. Organisations that want to request wallet data must register in the member state where they are established and need an access certificate. See Relying party registration.

24 December 2027: mandatory acceptance

From this date at the latest, private relying parties that are required by EU or national law or by contract to use strong user authentication for online identification must accept the EUDI Wallet when a user chooses to use it (Art. 5f(2)). The regulation names sectors including transport, energy, banking and financial services, social security, health, drinking water, postal services, digital infrastructure, education and telecommunications.

Micro and small enterprises, as defined in Recommendation 2003/361/EC, are exempt. Very large online platforms under the Digital Services Act must also accept the wallet (Art. 5f(3)); that paragraph does not set its own date. Public sector bodies that require electronic identification for online services must accept the wallet as well (Art. 5f(1)); that paragraph does not set its own date either.

Why many sources say “end of 2026” and “end of 2027”

The regulation does not state calendar dates. It sets periods that run from the entry into force of the implementing acts. Many media therefore round to “end of 2026” and “end of 2027”. The exact dates above are calculated from those periods; Eudigo will add an official Commission confirmation as a source once available.

Still open

  • National implementing laws: in several member states, including Germany and the Netherlands, the national law designating the registrar and supervisory bodies is still in progress. The German Bundestag is scheduled to vote on its Digital Identities Act on 15 October 2026.
  • Registration portals: in many countries no start date for relying party registration has been published yet unverified.
  • Fees: whether registration and access certificates will cost anything is still open in Germany; for most other countries Eudigo has no confirmed information yet.

Eudigo updates this overview when a date changes. Anyone advising organisations, or affected themselves, should mark two dates: 24 December 2026 (registers) and 24 December 2027 (mandatory acceptance).

FAQ

Why 24 December?

The deadlines run from the entry into force of the wallet implementing regulations. They were published in the Official Journal on 4 December 2024 and entered into force 20 days later, on 24 December 2024. Adding 24 or 36 months gives 24 December 2026 and 24 December 2027.

Will every country have a wallet by 24 December 2026?

Unlikely. As of 12 October 2026 the Eudigo index lists no certified wallet, and several countries have announced launches in 2027 or later. The Eudigo EUDI Index tracks the status of all 27 countries.

Do national launch dates change the legal deadlines?

No. The deadlines for member states and for acceptance by companies follow from the eIDAS Regulation. National launch dates are announcements by governments and can shift.
